The Woodside Fire remained at roughly 143 acres Friday morning as firefighters continued working along Sonoma County’s northern coast, according to Cal Fire. The blaze was reported to be 30% contained, up from 20% the previous evening.
The fire expanded from about 75 acres Thursday evening to 143 acres by 11 p.m., but did not grow overnight, NBC Bay Area reported. A Cal Fire morning update described the fire as approximately 142 acres.
Crews used favorable weather conditions to work through the night. Ground teams strengthened containment lines, conducted mop-up operations and addressed hot spots, while helicopters made water drops, according to the report.
Cal Fire said the response included 30 engines, one dozer, eight water tenders, eight hand crews, one fall module and overhead personnel.
Evacuation orders and warnings were still active Friday. Highway 1 remained closed between Timber Cove and Stewart Point, and Cal Fire asked the public to stay away from the area so firefighters and emergency personnel could work safely.
Smoke from the fire led the Bay Area Air District to issue a Spare the Air Alert. Residential wood burning was prohibited while the alert was in effect. The district advised older adults, pregnant people and those with asthma or heart disease to avoid smoky air, and recommended keeping windows and doors closed. It also advised people who needed to go outside to wear a properly fitted N95 mask.
Air quality was particularly poor in Sebastopol Friday morning, where particulate pollution reached hazardous levels, according to the Bay Area Air District.
