Santa Rosa police arrested a 36-year-old man after an alleged forced entry at an occupied home and a separate prowling report at a nearby residence, authorities said.
Officers were sent to a home in the 2700 block of Mohawk Street at about 10:52 p.m. Aug. 14 after a report that an unknown man had forced his way inside. Police said a 66-year-old resident restrained the man against an interior wall while trying to stop him.
The suspect allegedly continued struggling and repeatedly shut the home’s front door, preventing occupants from leaving. He ran away before officers arrived, according to police.
Earlier during the same shift, officers had responded to a separate residence a short distance away after a man matching the suspect’s description was reportedly seen looking through a window. Police said the man was also reported to have directed sexual remarks at someone inside that home. He was not located during that initial response.
After the Mohawk Street report, officers searched the surrounding area and found the suspect concealed in landscaping near Yuma Street, police said. He resisted attempts to detain him before officers took him into custody.
Edward Carver was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on allegations including burglary, false imprisonment, elder abuse, peeking while loitering, loitering or prowling on private property, and resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer. He is also being held on a parole violation and a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation parole hold. Bail was set at $250,000.
Police identified Carver as a registered sex offender and said they disclosed that status based on information available to the department about his current risk of sexual or violent reoffense. The department cited the reported conduct at two occupied homes in the same neighborhood and said the disclosure was intended to support public safety, not harassment or unlawful action.
The investigation has been referred to Santa Rosa police detectives. Anyone who observed or was contacted by a man matching the description in the area on Aug. 14, or who believes they had a similar encounter, is asked to call police at 707-528-5222 and reference case number 26-8800.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Arrested people are presumed innocent unless found guilty.
