Healdsburg High School’s fall sports season is getting underway with a new girls flag football team joining the school’s returning football, volleyball, golf, cross country and tennis programs.
The flag football team’s first game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Healdsburg High against Lower Lake. Coach Camellia Seghetti told the Healdsburg Tribune that about 25 girls tried out, creating a full roster for the program’s first season. The schedule includes 17 games.
Athletic Director Brian Osborn said the school has three complete volleyball teams, with 13 players on varsity, 14 on junior varsity and 13 on the freshman roster. The freshman team opened its season by defeating Credo, Rancho Cotate and Analy in straight sets at a tournament.
The varsity team includes returning starters Hannah Levine-Smith, Liz Aleman and Stevie Mitchell, all seniors, along with junior Ava Wickersham. Healdsburg lost its first home match to Cloverdale, 3-2. The next home match is set for Sept. 1 against Middletown.
Girls golf is moving from the North Bay League’s Redwood Division to the more competitive Oak Division, where Healdsburg will face Cardinal Newman, Windsor, Rancho Cotate and Analy. The team has 16 players, including six returning All-League athletes, according to coach Tony Viramontes. Freshman Brooklyn Viramontes leads a program that completed two consecutive undefeated seasons.
Home golf matches at Tayman Park are scheduled for Sept. 22 against Windsor, Sept. 29 against Cardinal Newman, Oct. 1 against Rancho Cotate and Oct. 13 against Analy.
The girls tennis roster has 19 players committed, although the singles and doubles positions are still being determined. Sana Katsuki, who played fourth-line singles last season, is expected to contend for the top singles position after competing in junior tournaments and training during the offseason.
Healdsburg’s first tennis match is Aug. 27 at Analy, followed by a home match against Ukiah on Aug. 28. The school also plans to field football, cheer and cross country teams this fall.
