Healdsburg High School has launched its first girls flag football program, opening the season with a 19-0 victory over Lower Lake in Healdsburg.
The game was played at home on Aug. 28, according to the Healdsburg Tribune’s report. The teams were scoreless at halftime before Healdsburg found opportunities downfield and pulled away in the second half. A photo caption in the report dates the official opener to Aug. 30, creating a discrepancy in the published dates.
About 25 students tried out for the team, and the roster includes athletes with varied skill sets, according to the program. Coaches said players have had to learn a new sport while adapting to different positions on the field.
The team’s schedule includes 17 games on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The regular season is set to conclude Oct. 21 with a game at Piner High School.
Camillia Seghetti, a third-grade teacher at Healdsburg’s Fitch Mountain Campus, is the team’s varsity coach. The coaching staff described the season as an opportunity for players to develop their skills and establish a foundation for the program’s continued growth.
